SA National Museum of Military History

Officially opened on 29 August 1947 by Prime Minister Jan Smuts, it was initially dedicated to chronicling South Africa’s role in the First and Second World Wars. In 1975, the museum expanded its scope beyond World War I and II, evolving from the South African National War Museum to include all military conflicts involving South Africa. Today, it serves as an educational and historical centre, housing an extensive collection of artifacts, weapons, uniforms, medals and archival records, offering visitors insight into the nation’s military heritage across various eras, national, regional and global conflicts.
