The Turffontein Racecourse was built in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg in 1887 and is one of South Africa’s premier horseracing venues. Racing has a strong following in South Africa and this challenging track is steeped in history, having seen some of the country’s most beloved equine champions delight the crowds over the years. The course is easily accessible from the highway. From elevated glass-fronted rooms there is a spectacular view of the track and Johannesburg’s iconic skyline. A day at the races is a different and exciting outing. The Highveld is known for glorious weather, making a day out in the manicured gardens most enjoyable. Turffontein has undergone extensive refurbishment: the parade ring has been moved to the front of the course, making it possible for race-goers to get close to horses and jockeys as they saddle up. The colours of silks and the extravagant fashions worn by race-goers at big meetings such as the Summer Cup (in November) all add to the glamour. The installation of floodlights means that Turffontein is also a night-racing venue during the summer season.
