October marks the creepy approach of Halloween with Joburg Tourism revealing some of the most fun ways to celebrate the spooky season Jozi style!
Dating back some 2000 years to the time of the Ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain, ancient Halloween celebrations saw the lighting of bonfires and superstitious participants adorn creepy costumes to ward off evil spirits returning to earth from the dead. Following these customs, there were a number evolutions made to the original traditions linked to what is now known as the celebration of Halloween.
From All Saints Day observed on the 1st of November as well as All Hallows Eve which later evolved to Halloween, the history of Halloween is filled with many legends and folklore tales adding to the mystery and menacing traditions observed on the 31st of October today.
Traditionally observed predominantly in western societies across the United States and the United Kingdom, Halloween is fondly celebrated by customary trick or treat traditions especially enjoyed by the little ones, pumpkin carving and spooky decorations and of course the opportunity to dress the kids along with mom and dad in their favoured costumes. One of the largest grossing commercial celebrations of the year, Halloween continues to gain momentum in South Africa with a growing number of events and happenings taking place throughout in build up to the day and post this year’s midweek Halloween traditions.
