Our first member event of the year was held on Friday 8 March at Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton. Dr Andre Nel, the Director of LLMA Consultants, a professional consulting services company, was our guest speaker.
Dr Nel spoke to members about emergency planning, something that is essential for any organisation, particularly with regard to saving lives. Many hotel incidents within the last two years have ranged from fires to health & safety issues, and Dr Nel says it is important for all hotel staff to be trained in emergency evacuation, fire-fighting and certain legal procedures. He says, “Clients also need to have peace of mind that they will have a safe stay in a hotel.”
Starting his career as a fire fighter in his home town of East London, Dr Nel moved up the ranks and eventually served as Fire Chief in three different fire departments in South Africa. He joined the SA Defence Force as a fire instructor, later serving as a health & safety practitioner. He is qualified in aviation safety and is a facilitator/assessor and moderator. The highlight in his career was when he was asked to train the aircrew for State Presidents Mandela and Mbeki on the then new Boeing business jet ‘The Inkwazi’ (Fish Eagle), our equivalent of Air Force One. Andre spent two weeks training the crew in firefighting/survival/on board emergencies/medical aviation and safety procedures and was awarded a military merit medal by the Chief of Air Command and Control for his efforts and cost saving initiatives at the end of the training.
LLMA Consultants (Pty) LTD has defined many courses and workshops to facilitate training staff in the areas of fire-fighting and health & safety practices. The company has an African footprint, having provided these services in places like the DRC and Burundi.
